Quick question:

What armor level were these pets dealing damage against for the tests? Perhaps Prima used a different armor level for determining the damage of the pets?

depends who you ask and what you mean by "strong"

I've seen people make arguments that the Warthog is better based soley on damage type (blunt)

(everyone's gonna flame me for this I bet)

doesn the warthog have a charge ability?
I've played constantly with my warthog and it dashes twice as fast as a Lynx towards a creature you engage.

Is this a quirk? Am I insane? Or is it actually possible that the Warthog really has this ability (like the spider has immunity v. bleeding)

This thread is now the official thread about pets in the Community Works. Dragon Incarnate, who posted the pet guide hasn't been active recently. If the original post needs to be updated, please post the new version of the pet guide here and contact a moderator who will update the OP. Thanks for your help.

It seems no one update or post anything after... so...

According to people of GWonline's research:
There are no difference amount the type of pets. The only thing that effect a pet is its evolution. There are playful, hearty, aggressive, dire, and elder.

Their stat changes are:

Playful: +30 hp -1 damage
Hearty: +60 hp -2 damage
Aggressive: -30 hp +1 damage
Dire: -60 HP +2 damage
Elder: +3 damage (no hp change)

The elder is no doubt, what most people prefered. The Underworld spider is not the best, it is just that the tested Black Widow happened to be an elder.

To train a pet into an elder, it is required that you change your playing style completely after the first evolution. If your first evolution is playful, then you must make your pet do the damage and killing the rest of its leveling until elder. If your first evolution is aggressive, then you must not allow the pet to do further damage and killing the rest of its leveling until elder. The actual format of how pet evolve is still quite up in the air currently, but that is around how it happen. You will not knowtice pet's evolution in the middle of battle, you will need to enter a town/outpost to refresh the evolution name.

To find out your pet's evolution, just type /namepet
Pet have 80 AL at lv20 and they run 20% faster that human characters.

Edit: change the armor screw up

Pets get 80al at 20, not 100.

It's true that a pet will have an innate armor level of 80 at level 20; however, with Otyugh's Cry that can be pumped up to 100 unconditional (not elemental or physical specifically) armor. Add to that the 11-15 absorbtion that a decently supported Call of Protection will give and a pet is a monstrous tank.

I know it is documented everywhere that the attack bonus for the Dire pet is +2 and the attack bonus for the Elder pet is +3. However, I've done my own testing of the relative damage between an Elder and Dire since the update making their damage visible. I took a level 15 Dire and a level 15 Elder out into Old Ascalon and let them beat up on 5 different varieties of enemies while only having 1 point in Beastmastery (I had a rune and didn't feel like making new armor just for the test). I carefully documented the damage range reached on each foe killed until each of the pets had killed 24 of each type of enemy I was dealing with. By that point, definite damage ranges had emerged, and the Dire undoubtedly has higher attack than the Elder by approximately 1.142%. If indeed the damage range on a "typical" level 20 pet is 15-28 as has also been documented everywhere, then that 1.142% comes out to approximately +3 attack over the Elder.

I didn't come up with exact damage values for the Dire or the Elder because my purpose was only to test the preconcieved notion that the Elder is better on all counts than the Dire pet. Nothing else ArenaNet has done has created one uber anything, and as such I didn't believe pets would be subject to such imbalance. My test fulfilled its purpose and illustrated that while the Dire pet's health may be significantly reduced in comparison to the Elder, it has an attack boost to counteract that.
